Doug Campbell // Desktop Software & Support Manager // Meriden, CT Office // Employee Owner since 2014
What drew you to a career in IT? It wasn’t the original plan. I have a four-year degree in architecture but have always had a knack with computers. So, in working on the technical tools in the architecture field I took on some of the duties for CAD management, which turned into more software management, where I found my specialty. I’ve now been focused on the IT side of professional services for about 25 years.
What is your favorite part of your job? I enjoy solving problems; that’s probably what it comes down to. We have various departments, each with specific aspects when it comes to IT needs. How they are interacting with the same software comes down to their day-to-day responsibilities. Usually when I get the call it’s for problem resolution and I love taking on the challenge. I’m always learning and that’s a great part of what I do.
Outside of work, what do you do for fun? Well, I can’t say I’m an avid gamer, but I do play video games. I like the games where I don’t have to think about it; it’s more automatic and relaxing. I just try to just disconnect from work because there’s more than enough work to go around. I enjoy my family and my dog, Maizie. I also do a lot for my parents. They’re elderly now. They just went through the flood up in Naugatuck, CT and lost their water heater, furnace, washer and dryer. So, I’m up there helping them out. This is the cleanest the basement’s ever been in 50 years. But really those kinds of things, helping family, and taking time out. Just disconnecting. You just need some time to get away from the screen.
October is ESOP month. What does being an employee owner mean to you? Really, I think it’s opportunity. Any employee is given the opportunity to participate at the level they feel they can provide by being able to leverage their skill sets. I really value being part of the equation that helps move the company further.
Anything in particular you are looking forward to in ESOP month? The coffee breaks during ESOP Month are great because they give you a break when you’re in the office. It’s nice to step away. And yes, you have a job, yes, you have a deadline. But it’s nice to go get a coffee and a donut with a bunch of other people before we go back in front of the computer screens to get things done. It’s good to have a degree of separation. And those breaks give everyone a chance to be human. That’s what ESOP Month is for – giving us all a chance to disconnect from work for a bit and connect with each other instead.
