Project Scientist – Hazardous Building Materials (HBM)

BL Companies is growing! We’re seeking a Project Scientist to join our team and support environmental and industrial hygiene assessments.

A successful candidate will have 2-5 years of experience with industrial hygiene and hazardous building materials related projects.

This role primarily focuses on hazardous building materials, industrial hygiene, and safety assessments. The role involves a combination of fieldwork, sample collection, regulatory compliance, and technical reporting.

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supports and collaborates with all team members in conducting complex hazardous building material and/or industrial hygiene and safety assessments

  • Assists in the preparation and collection of samples and data, including setting up equipment and documenting observations

  • Analyzes previous building science and/or industrial hygiene and safety surveys to determine if additional sampling is needed or to develop scopes of work

  • Independently performs field assessments where problems encountered are generally well-understood and easily identified

  • Collects environmental and personal samples for analysis and prepares them for shipment to the laboratory

  • Maintains, calibrates, and operates building science and industrial hygiene instruments and equipment

  • Compiles and summarizes analytical data, organizes information for reports, creates sample location diagrams, and drafts reports with findings, conclusions, and recommendations

  • Performs air sampling, project monitoring, and other environmental testing to measure concentrations of pollutants or hazardous agents and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards

  • Contributes to educational and regulatory updates for colleagues and management on potential hazards, safe work practices, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Collaborates with team members on various tasks

  • May assist with basic management duties such as developing scopes of work and proposal budgets

  • Studies reference materials and participates in training and professional development activities

  • Maintains and tracks required annual training and licensing, as applicable

  • Utilizes Microsoft Office and internal applications/software programs

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations for various contaminants

  • Stays current with regulatory updates and industry trends

  • Travels to client sites, including occasional overnight stays

  • Communicates effectively with team members, clients, and contractors

  • Practices and maintains a safe working environment

  • Always presents oneself in a professional and clean manner

Requirements:

  • 2–5 years of experience with industrial hygiene and/or hazardous building material projects.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass drug and alcohol testing.

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, industrial hygiene, occupational health, biology, geology, engineering, or a related field.

  • Ability to wear PPE including a respirator and safety harness.

  • Able to lift at least 25 lbs.

  • Basic knowledge of construction materials and building systems.

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders.  Reliable transportation.

Experience with:

  • Asbestos, lead-based paint, PCB, and radon surveys

  • Indoor air quality assessments and building surveys

Technical Requirements:

  • Licenses (or willingness to obtain within specified timeframes):

    • Asbestos Project Monitor (within 6 months)

    • Asbestos Inspector (within 3 months)

    • Lead Inspector (within 6 months)

  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and industry-related applications.

  • Familiarity with sampling protocols, equipment, and hazardous material practices.

  • Working knowledge of regulations related to asbestos, lead, PCBs, radon, IAQ, and related fields.

Other Requirements:

  • Local field work: up to 85%

  • Occasional extended hours, nights, and weekends: up to 25%

  • Regional or out-of-state travel: up to 25%

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification preferred.
