Whether you want to play pickleball or enjoy a turkey lunch, meet up with old friends or make new ones, the Calendar House Senior Center provides a community space that fosters connection. The Town of Southington employed BL Companies to provide design and construction administration services for the new Center, which was constructed on the site of the previous facility and remained in operation throughout construction. When creating a space and needs program for a community facility, it’s critical to engage a spectrum of community members who will be utilizing the space. That’s why BL Companies looked at data provided by Center administrators, staff, user members, instructors, volunteers and members of the general public who attended the open house forums during the research portion of the study. These community insights, along with further investigations of the space performed through site visits and observations of the building usage by the BL Companies team, shine in the design of the 22,000 SF building. The bigger, better facility means more opportunities for fitness, recreation, social engagement and the administrative areas to support those activities.
