PSEG Long Island, Bay Park Plant 13.2 kV Feeder
Oceanside/Bay Park, NY
In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, a sewage treatment plant in East Rockaway, New York was facing a power problem. Formerly relying on power provided by an on-site generation plant that had been rendered unreliable due to the storm, BL Companies was brought in to design an electrical distribution duct running from the Barrett substation in Oceanside to the plant.
This feeder project aimed to deliver dependable power to the plant via a two mile long duct, and BL Companies’ design process incorporated the use of subsurface utility information, and the crossing of a railroad using bridge conduit supports. The scope of this project also included sourcing and evaluating soil borings in proximity to a horizontal-directional-drill (HDD) crossing beneath the East Rockaway channel, as well as rig selection, route geometry assessment and managing pipe stresses during installation.
